Meetings and Conventions Prince Edward Island

By on May 9, 2014

Q&A with Michael Matthews, Executive Director at PIE Meetings and Conventions.

Can you provide some fast facts for planners, number of hotel rooms, number of meeting rooms, conference and/or convention centre info?

Island-wide we have over 2,000 hotel rooms and 250,000 sq.ft of meeting space across the Province.  The Prince Edward Island Conventions Centre opened their doors this past August with 50,000 sq.ft of new space built adjacent to, and right on the Charlottetown harbour – the floor to ceiling water views are a real distraction!

We also offer resort and golf product all boasting dramatic coastal views and a cottage-resort sector that thrives on small adventure and experiential group business.

Over the past year what is new that would incite planners to come to your destination?

The new PEI convention centre has increased our capacity to host larger clients with our largest boasting 1,200 delegates this spring.  Combined with the 150th celebration of the meeting that lead to the birth of our nation PEI 2014 Inc. the demand is unprecedented.  Demand for our coastal experiences has always been there, but now we have the meetings infrastructure to host large groups like never before.

What does the meeting/event industry have to look forward to in your area?

The meetings and conventions industry is growing on PEI.  We are seeing tourism product tweak their offerings to fit planner’s needs and the delegate consumer.  Golf remains a spectacular draw but you can also have unique offerings like hosting 500 delegates at a secluded beach event with lobster and dramatic cliff views included, or be a lobster fisherman for the day, or hand feed the giant blue fin tuna or be part of an 1864 pub-crawl – top hats included.

If planners are interested in holding their activities in your area, who should they contact?

If you’d like to access our island hospitality and authentic experiences, Meetings & Conventions PEI is unique in Canada as a DMO having an entire Province as their playground.  Contact us at or 1-855-368-3688.  Michael Matthews, Executive Director.

Other notes:

By air P.E.I. offers direct flights from Halifax, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal, and New York during the summer months. By Car, the Confederation Bridge (a 13-kilometre engineering marvel) is a convenient and memorable way to reach the Island. You can also choose to experience a drive-on car ferry service that runs between Prince Edward Island and Nova Scotia.

With miles of white sandy beaches and red sandstone cliffs, thriving arts & culture community scene, and 32 golf courses will ensure your clients will leave reinvigorated, rewarded and motivated!
